Tensions are rife between the worlds most powerful military might, the United States of America and the Lion of Persia, Iran after Donald Trump ordered air strikes which killed powerful Iranian General, Qassem Suleimani.
It all started when a US air strike in Iraq killed some militia men believed to be surrogates of the Iranian government, this led to mass protest in Iraq which breached the gates of the much fortified US Consulate in Baghdad, resulting in a standoff.
Again, Iranian rocket attacks killed a US military contractor in an Iraqi Military base in Kurkuk.
The US accused Iran of ordering the protests and killing of the US military contractor. In retaliation, Donald Trump ordered strikes against Iranian targets which resulted in the killing of General Suleimani.
Qassem Suleimani was hit by the drone strike while local allies from the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) drove him from Baghdad airport. The de facto leader of the PMF, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a close Suleimani associate, was also killed in the attack.
“General Suleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region,” a Pentagon statement said. “This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans.”
It is unknown what would be the next line of action by Iran but it is expected to retaliate in some way or form leaving many to worry a full blown world war 3 might just be lurking.
The United states as a precautionary measure has asked its citizens to leave Iran as soon as possible.
