The National health Insurance Scheme was instituted by the then president J.A Kuffour to ensure access to healthcare for all especially the poor and aged.
The scheme is supported by taxes levied from various institutions and services and a small premium paid by subscribers. Riddled with debt, it was recently bailed out by the president Nana Akuffo Addo, paying off almost 70% of the schemes debt owed service providers.
In the light of this, a memo intercepted by nsemwoha.com purports that MP of Dome Kwabenya constituency, Lawyer Adwoa Safo requested for funds from the scheme to sponsor her attendance of a seminar on governance and leadership. This was met with public outcry, with people asking why a cash strapped scheme would further be strained by MPs draining its funds for personal use.
The practice of MPs taking money from the funds for unstated purposes has been going on for sometime. The herald reported in 2014 that MPs took a sum of GHC 32,000 each for private use. Below is the report by the Herald.
