President’s ability to fire elected MMDCEs defeats referendum purpose – Haruna Iddrisu

Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu who is also the Minority leader, has slammed the Akufo-Addo led administration of a myopic assessment in the amendment of Article 243(1) of the 1992 constitution which allows election the people to elect Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu intimated that the bill brought to Parliament by the government for the amendment of article 243(1) is flawed and defeats the reasons cited why MMDCEs should be elected.

“The President being able to fire MMDCEs though they have been elected defeats the purpose of the amendment, so if you amend article 243 (1) without amending article 243 (3), then you are doing cherry-picking halfhearted constitutional amendment,” he said in an interview on Joy News’ Super Morning Show.

He furrher argued that the Minority is opposing the election of MMDCEs, but only calling for the amendment for the election of the MMDCEs to be concurrently tied to the amendment of Article 243 (3) and Article 248 (1) and (2).

Hon. Iddrisu cited articles 246 (2), 249 and 242 which he believes are fundamental to  the amendment of the bill but the President has remained silent on them.
