We live in a world where lots and lots of people are hiding behind the anonymity of the internet to defraud unsuspecting people through various methods.
One such method, prevalent on photo sharing platform Instagram is the ‘sympathy fraud’. An unscrupulous person on the platform resorts to fabricated and typically tragic stories about themselves to solicit for help, mostly from celebrities.
One such fraudster, is the user @_ladykel who tried to play on the sympathy of Medikal.
In a comment under one of Medikal’s posts, she wrote: “I’m currently battling with suicidal thoughts and it’s really weighing me down, my name is kelechi, I’m 17, I have only one sibling which is my younger sister, We lost our parents in the space of 7months and ever since then our lives hasn’t been same, we’ve been struggling like never before, to the extent that we had to pull out from sch, even for us to feed twice a day is extremely difficult, We are going through hell right now, I understand it’s wrong asking for help on the internet but please if you’ve ever been in a difficult situation before please I’m on my knees, please come to our aid, We don’t have anything to eat this week at all, I genuinely help, I truly do 😢”
Medikal who obviously knew she was a fraudster replied: __ladykel somebody no get internet bundle sef, he no kill himself 🙄
Medikal himself has been accused of being fraudster who made money by duping people over the internet.
