World renouned Reggae/dancehall star Popcaan Unruly has replied comments made by Ghanaian musician Kwaw Kesse over the impunity with which the Jamaican born star smoked marijuana on the streets of Accra without consequence.
Kwaw Kese bemoaned the unfair treatment meted out to locals who are caught smoking marijuana which is as yet illegal in the country but let foreigners who do same go off the hook for the mere reason that they’re foreigners.
But replying under same post on Instagram in which Kwaw Kese made his remarks, Popcaan said he wasn’t a foreigner because all blacks come from Africa. He further requested that the two try to organize a meeting with the government in furtherance of talks to legalize the herb.
“i’m not a foreigner bro we all came from africa don’t be mad bro let’s try to organize a meeting with the government to legalize weed it’s simple #unruly” he wrote.
Kwaw Kese in November 2014 was arrested by police after he was caught smoking marijuana in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital. He was sentenced to days in prison and fined GHC1,200 after a lengthy trial.
The issue of marijuana legalization has been a hotly debated topic within a deeply conservative Ghanaian society, with many calling for the legalization of the herb at least for commercial purposes in the meantime so Ghana can tap into the enormous economic benefits it could provide.
Recreational and Commercial use or cultivation of marijuana in any shape or form is blanketly banned in the country and one faces a jail term if found carrying, selling, using or cultivating the herb.
