Ghanaians blast NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi for mocking killing of George Floyd in cartoon

The National Democratic Congress NDC, a political party in Ghana and its national communications officer, Sammy Gyamfi have come under attack for posting a cartoon that has been interpreted to be a mockery of the unfortunate killing of unarmed black American George Floyd in the United states.

The cartoon tried to draw a vivid yet horrifying parallel between a local situation with the Electoral commission (EC) in Ghana with regards to a new voters register to the racially charged killing of George Floyd by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin by kneeling on his neck despite cries he couldn’t breathe.

The cartoon depicted the Ghanaian EC chairperson Jean Mensah, kneeling on the neck of a supposed Ghanaian voter who was yelling “I can’t breathe” just as was seen in the horrific video in the George Floyd incident.

Sammy Gyamfi posted the picture using the hashtags #icantbreathe which is associated with protest seeking justice for Goerge Floyd.

He later tried to justify the apparent insensitive cartoon after an initial backlash, saying the cartoon was a mockery but meant to highlight the situation faced by the Ghanaian voter.

This cartoon doesn’t mock the painful xenophobic murder of George Floyd or seek to exploit same for political capital in any way.

Nothing wrong with sharing a cartoon which draws a parallel between the painful xenophobic murder of George Floyd, and the evil attempt by the GH EC to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register.‬” he wrote.

Below are some of the REACTIONS from netizens to the cartoon.

Nana Aduse Poku wrote: “Your justification has only worsened matters ; it exposes your insensitivity and carelessness!

Its sad that you’ve completely lost it! Those charging and cheering you on now are the same people that will come and tell you some years to come that you’ve got no integrity.

Go and ask how Okudzeto Ablakwa and Fiifi Kwetey are struggling to rebrand themselves.

Abdul Hafis Wumpuni wrote: Desperation at its crescendo. Whilst we’re mourning Floyd these guys decide to play politics with his death. What at all is NDC turning into? You guys will remain in opposition till eternity
