The vice president of the republic of Ghana, H.E. Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has donated GHC500 each to the head porters, known locally as Kayaye’s who where trying to escape the lockdown but were stopped at Ejisu.
This is to help with their upkeep for the duration of the two-week partial lockdown imposed to stem the spread of Covid-19.
Yesterday, Police at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region intercepted two cargo trucks which were transporting over 70 head porters, popularly known as kayayei, to Walewale in the North East Region, reports CitiNewsroom.
This occurred during the two-week partial lockdown of Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa which began on Monday as part of measures to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The drivers had covered the trucks with tarpaulins to try and outsmart the security personnel stationed at the various checkpoints.
in other news, President Akufo-Addo has directed that government assist all Kayayei (head porters) by giving each of them GHs 10 per day to buy food throughout the lockdown period and provide them temporary abode.
